Raise to Korean War Museum

Legislator Urges Other Politicians to Help

MOLINE, IL - Standing in front of the site of the Korean War Museum in Springfield, State Representative Mike Boland (D-East Moline) announced that he has contributed part of his recent legislative pay raise to the fund for the Korean War National Museum. Boland’s contribution is one in a series of donations Boland is making, in order to honor his personal pledge to give away this year’s legislative salary increase to charity.

“I am very proud to be here today, contributing to this wonderful project for a visionary world class museum in Springfield to honor the brave individuals who served, fighting for freedom, in Korea,” said Boland. “As a former middle school teacher of government and history, I’ve always had a great appreciation for the history that’s preserved and taught in museums, so the concept and plan for this facility is very exciting to me,” he added.

This is also a very personal contribution for me as well,” Boland continued. “My brother, Thomas Boland, served in the Korean War, so it is more than a war I’ve studied, it was a conflict that touched my immediate family,” he added. “My contribution today is also a personal tribute to my brother and his service in this battle for freedom, as well as a tribute to the brave individuals he served with in Korea,” Boland stated.

Robert Fitts, Past President of the Korean War Veterans Association, joined Boland at the news conference. Boland’s $1000 contribution to the museum fulfils a portion of his pledge to donate his entire 2007 legislative pay raise to charity. Previously this year, as a part of that pledge, Boland made a significant donation at a Quad-Cities benefit for a cancer survivor who resides in his district.

Representative Boland has been a staunch advocate for Veterans and active service military. Boland is the original sponsor of the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund Act, which created a state fund to help the families of Illinois National Guard and Reservists who were called to active duty in the war on terror. Boland was also the lead sponsor of legislation, which created the Veteran’s scratch off lottery ticket as a mechanism to fund Veterans programs in Illinois.
